This is the website for the U.S. Government's Clinical Trials Database. This database provides information about clinical research trials for thyroid cancer and other diseases. This list describes clinical trials that are recruiting new participants. The National Institutes of Health, through its National Library of Medicine, developed this database and web site. The goal of this database is to provide patients, family members, and members of the public with current information about clinical research studies. Each study tries to answer scientific questions and to find better ways to prevent, diagnose, or treat cancer.
- In cancer research a clinical trial is designed to show how a particular anticancer strategy—for instance, a promising drug, a gene therapy treatment, a new diagnostic test, or a possible way to prevent cancer—affects the people who receive it.
- A clinical trial is one of the stages of a long and careful cancer research process. Getting promising results from testing a new drug on mice, for example, is a preliminary step to human research studies. Treatments that work well in mice do not always work well in people.
- People can benefit from clinical trials. In treatment trials, for example, participants receive high-quality cancer care—and will be among the first to benefit if a new approach is proven to work.
- Only eligible people can participate in a clinical trial. Each study has its own guidelines for who can participate. Generally, participants are alike in key ways—such as the type and stage of cancer, age, gender, and other factors.
- There may be drawbacks. New treatments under study are not always better than, or even as good as, standard care. And they may have unexpected side effects. Through a process called “informed consent” you will learn about a study’s treatments and tests, and their possible benefits and risks, before deciding whether or not to participate.
- In treatment trials involving people who have cancer, placebos are very rarely used.
- Many treatment trials are designed to compare a new treatment with a standard treatment, which is the best treatment currently known for a cancer, based on results of past research. In these studies patients are randomly assigned to one group or another.
- Clinical trials take place all over the country—in cancer centers, other major medical centers, community hospitals and clinics, physicians’ offices and veterans’ and military hospitals.
- Health plans and managed care providers do not always cover all patient care costs in a study. What they cover varies by plan and by study. Ask a doctor, nurse, or social worker form the study to help you determine in advance what costs are covered. The research costs, such as data management, are covered by the study sponsor.

Oral Gefitinib As Effective As Injected Docetaxel For Survival Of Patients With Non-Small-Cell Lung Cancer (Interest Study)
Gefitnib is as effective a second-line treatment as docetaxel for patients with non-small cell* lung cancer. The INTEREST study, published in an Article in this week's edition of The Lancet, thus establishes gefitinib as a valid treatment option for people with this condition. The study was written by Dr Edward Kim, M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, Texas, USA and colleagues.

Type Of Breast Reconstruction Impacts Radiation Therapy Outcomes
For breast cancer patients who underwent a mastectomy who undergo radiation therapy after immediate breast reconstruction, autologous tissue reconstruction provides fewer long-term complications and better cosmetic results than tissue expander and implant reconstruction, according to a study in the November issue of the International Journal of Radiation Oncology*Biology*Physics, the official journal of the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology.

Pediatric Cancer : Alteration Of A Gene Causes Neuroblastoma
Olivier Delattre's team (Inserm Unit 830 "Genetics and Biology of Cancer") of the Institut Curie reveal in an article in the 16 October issue of Nature that alteration of the ALK gene is closely associated with the most frequent solid extracerebral tumor in children neuroblastoma. By studying the familial forms of this tumor, the researchers also conclude that ALK is a gene that predisposes to neuroblastoma. This discovery may allow the development of new treatments in neuroblastomas.

Ortho Biotech Announces NDA Submission For Trabectedin For The Treatment Of Relapsed Ovarian Cancer
Ortho Biotech Products, L.P. announced the submission of a new drug application (NDA) to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for trabectedin when administered in combination with DOXIL(R) (doxorubicin HCI liposome injection)for the treatment of women with relapsed ovarian cancer (ROC). If approved, trabectedin combined with DOXIL will provide a new, non-platinum treatment option for these patients in the United States.

Bovie Medical Corporation Announces FDA 510(K) Clearance To Market SEER Tissue Resection Device
Bovie Medical Corporation (the "Company") (NYSE Alternext US: BVX), a manufacturer and marketer of electrosurgical products, today announced the Company received 510(k) clearance from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to market its SEER tissue resection device intended for initial use in liver oncology surgery. The SEER device uses conductive sintered steel as an electrode for radio frequency (RF) for cutting and coagulation.
